The Paganini School of Music offers private cello lessons in Katy for students of every age and level, taught in the Suzuki or traditional method by dedicated, experienced teachers. Every cello student is part of the whole school: group classes, two recitals a year, and masterclasses with visiting artists are all part of studio life here.

Who our cello lessons are for:

Young beginners. Suzuki cello welcomes children around age four, building ear, posture, and a happy daily routine before reading music enters the picture. Parents attend lessons and coach the short daily practice at home; no musical background is needed.

School orchestra students. Orchestra in Katy ISD begins in sixth grade, and many of our students come to us to get ahead of it or to go further than a large class can take them. We teach students from Katy ISD, Cy-Fair ISD, Fort Bend ISD, and Lamar CISD, and our lessons are built to reinforce what the school directors are teaching, not compete with it. Our teachers prepare students for region orchestra auditions, and we host free community region classes open to every Katy ISD middle school orchestra student; the most recent one drew about 60 players.

Adults. Adult beginners and returning players are welcome in traditional lessons at every level.

Why families choose the Paganini School for cello

Our director, Sam Matthews, began violin at four as a Suzuki student, later switched to cello, and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in cello performance at the Peabody Conservatory. He taught cello and orchestra for many years before founding the school, and the program and faculty are shaped by that experience: solid technique, good sound, and steady, encouraging progress.

Performance is part of the program

Group classes, two recitals each year, and clinics with visiting and resident artists give every student a reason to prepare and a supportive room to play in. That's where practice turns into confidence.

Cello lessons: Questions we get the most!

What age can a child start cello lessons? Suzuki cello can begin as young as four, using a small fractional-size instrument and short, playful daily practice with a parent's help. Older beginners do well in traditional lessons that bring in note reading sooner. Orchestra in Katy ISD starts in sixth grade; many of our students begin private lessons before that or take them alongside orchestra.

Do we need to own a cello before the first lesson? No. Sam's Strings Violin Shop, in the same building, sizes each student in person and rents cellos in every fractional size from $53.99 a month, with size exchanges as the player grows. Why choose the cello? The cello is played sitting down, resting against the body between the knees, and many young children find that position comfortable and natural right away. Its range is close to the human voice, from a deep, warm bass up to a singing high register, and it moves between carrying the bass line and taking the melody. Cellists read bass clef to begin with, adding tenor and treble clef as they advance. Cellos come in small sizes, so a young beginner starts on an instrument that fits. It's the largest of the three, but locally most public schools keep cellos at school for class use, so the rental cello stays home as the practice instrument and rarely has to travel. If you're not sure, come put all three in your child's hands at the shop.

Suzuki or traditional: which is right for my child? Suzuki teaches music the way children learn language: by ear first, through listening, imitation, and small daily repetitions, with a parent involved as the home coach. It suits young beginners especially well. Traditional instruction leans earlier into reading and works beautifully for older starters. We teach both, and we're happy to talk through which fits your child.

Do you teach adult cello students? Yes. Adult beginners and returning players are welcome in traditional lessons at every level, and it is never too late to start.

How much do lessons cost, and how long are they? Private lessons are available in 30, 45, 60, and 90-minute lengths and start at $45 for 30 minutes; group classes start at $30. Rates vary by teacher. Enrollment is by semester, with a one-time $35 annual registration fee for new families and a choice of full-semester payment or a payment plan.

How much should a beginning cellist practice? Our expectation is simple: match daily practice to lesson length, so a 30-minute lesson means about 30 minutes of practice each day. For brand-new beginners, fifteen to thirty focused minutes daily beats an hour on Saturday, every time; for the littlest ones, three five-minute sessions spread through the day work well. A good rule from Dr. Suzuki himself: only practice on the days you eat. Daily listening to recordings of current and upcoming pieces is part of practice, too.

Do you offer group classes, recitals, or clinics? Yes. Group classes, two recitals a year, and clinics with visiting and resident artists are all part of the program. Performing in a supportive room is where practice turns into confidence.

Can private lessons help with my child's school orchestra? Very much so.
